Being Bong. (Question)

gummybear saidWed, 05 Aug 2009 13:50:28 -0000 ( Link )

My name is Ishika.I’m intensely patriotic & love my language (Bengali), but apparently not everyone around me feels this way. Some of my classmates actually laugh if anyone speaks Bengali in class! Are any of you ashamed to speak your vernacular language in public, or to admit that you speak at home?answer very frankly.

Obviously not ! We all should be proud of actually who we are. After all, this is our mother-tongue. There is no matter to feel shame, if we speak in Bengali. At least we should not forget our origin.

It’s nice to speak in one’s mother tongue. However, when in the presence of others who aren’t familiar with it, it’s better to stick to a common language. Using a language that others don’t understand is seen as a sign of arrogance. I was in the company of 2 German gentlemen once – they were kind enough to talk in English all the time. They definitely are patriotic people, but out of courtesy they resorted to speaking in English. Similarly, if you use a vernacular language, just reflect for a moment whether you are alienating other people or not.

Btw, if someone laughs at you or your language – then that person is sadly mistaken. We have a great cultural heritage & should be proud of it. Its very silly to laugh at someone’s language or identity.

    hello,

I am a bengali medium student and have shifted to col/univ where most of the people speak in english…I am not so good in spoken( and perhaps not even in other sections also) and hence is often disregarded in many cases. Some of my classmates asked me whether the interviewer asked me in english in the interview . I felt very bad. I shared this just because I saw someone truely admired the language. In my opinion talking in one’s mother tounge is never bad. Its good that you know a language that is internationally recognised. Its very sad to hear such thing and those who laugh must be devoid of their own cultural value, I believe.
